10 upcoming streaming movies that we’re excited to watch in 2023

As 2022 comes to an end and we celebrate the best streaming films of the year, it’s time to look ahead at what the new year will have in store. There are already plenty of announced streaming movies in 2023 to get excited about.

With new titles from iconic auteurs like Martin Scorsese to new live-action remakes of Disney classics, 2023 is shaping up to be another big year for streaming movies. And every major streamer — from Netflix to Apple TV Plus to Peacock and more — is getting in on the action.

Streaming movies coming in 2023

The Pale Blue Eye

Netflix — January 6

Christian Bale as Augustus Landor in The Pale Blue Eye - streaming movies in 2023

Christian Bale stars in this moody horror mystery coming very early on Netflix in the new year. He plays veteran detective Augustus Landor, who is investigating a string of grisly murders with the help of a young cadet named Edgar Allan Poe, years before Poe’s success as a writer.

We’re very excited about this new Netflix film. Director Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace, also starring Bale, was one of the best films of the 2010s, and seeing the two reunited is very promising.

Netflix is still the leading premium streaming service, with over 200 million worldwide subscribers. It offers thousands of movies and TV shows to binge watch, including its always growing list of original films and series, including Stranger Things, The Witcher, Bridgerton, and many more.

Teen Wolf: The Movie

Paramount Plus — January 26

Tyler Posey as Scott McCall in Teen Wolf: The Movie

In this follow-up to the MTV show that ran from 2011 to 2017, werewolf Scott McCall has to put together a team of familiar faces to fight a whole new evil threat that could be his most deadly foe yet.

If you were a fan of Teen Wolf, you won’t need any convincing to get on board. The soapy teen fantasy series was addictive when it was on, and this film promises to play all the hits. It’s also the launching pad for a whole new Paramount Plus series in the same universe: Wolf Pack, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and launching the same day.

Shotgun Wedding

Prime Video — January 27

Jennifer Lopez as Darcy Rivera in a wedding dress, pulling on her veil. The other end is being pulled by osh Duhamel as Tom Fowler in Shotgun Wedding - streaming movies in 2023

Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel star in this Amazon Prime Video romcom. Darcy and Tom are all set to get married. They’ve planned a beautiful destination wedding, and their loved ones have assembled. Now all they have to do is deal with the fact that the whole wedding party has been taken hostage.

Romcoms have lost some of their elevated status in Hollywood in recent years. It’s nice to see streamers picking up the slack, and this Prime Video original movie looks like good old-fashioned fun. Having an icon of the genre like Jennifer Lopez doesn’t hurt either.

You People

Netflix — January 27

(L to R) David Duchovny as Arnold, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Shelley, Jonah Hill (Writer-Producer) as Ezra, Lauren London as Amira, Eddie Murphy as Akbar, and Nia Long as Fatima in You People

Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill star in this new comedy from director Kenya Barris on Netflix. A new couple struggles with a culture clash as their families get to know each other.

With an all-star cast including Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and David Duchovny, and a timely, uncomfortable sense of humor, You People is a comedy to look forward to in 2023.

Debbie and Peter are best friends. They’re also complete opposites. She’s happy being a mom with a routine in LA. He’s all about the next adventure in New York. When they swap houses for a week, though, they come to realize that maybe they both want something else. From life and from each other.

Here’s another streaming romcom, this one starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. With a classic will they/won’t they set-up and big-name stars, it’s hard not to get on board if you’re a fan of the genre.

Argylle

Apple TV Plus — TBD

In this Apple TV Plus spy film, Henry Cavill plays the titular Argylle, a globe-trotting super-spy who goes on international adventures. Cavill is joined onscreen by Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Director Matthew Vaughn has proven himself, directing crime, action, and espionage films including titles like Kingsmen, Layer Cake, Kick-Ass, and X-Men First Class. Between that and an all-star cast, it’s not hard to get excited about this streaming movie in 2023.

Community: The Movie

Peacock — TBD

Community

The beloved sitcom Community is back for a feature-length streaming movie on Peacock. Very little is known about the plot, but original stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong are all back.

The NBC comedy is finally keeping its recurring joke/promise to have six seasons and a movie. It was a rocky road though. After the series was cancelled, it moved to Yahoo! as a streaming original. Now, years later, it’s finally back. We’ll have to wait and see if it lives up to the hype, but we’re pretty excited to check it out.

Peacock

NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service offers a lot of great movies and TV shows to stream on demand, along with live news and sports. Best of all, you can watch lots of its content for free, or watch all of it with a paid subscription starting at just $4.99 a month.

Extraction 2

Netflix — TBD

Chris Hemsworth on a train in winter in Extraction 2 - streaming movies in 2023

Netflix’s breakout 2020 action hit Extraction is back for a sequel. Chris Hemsworth returns as Australian mercenary Tyler Rake. Rake is back after barely surviving the events of the first film. Now, he’s on a mission to rescue the family of a Georgian gangster.

It’s hard to tell what to expect from Extraction 2. The first film was based on a comic, and we’re now in fresh territory. With director Sam Hargrave back at the helm, and Joe Russo of the Russo brothers writing, we’re expecting another high-octane actioner, and that’s enough to get us excited.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Apple TV Plus — TBD

Based on David Grann’s bestselling book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of a string of murders in the 1920s within the oil-wealthy Osage Nation. The murders came to be known as the Reign of Terror.

Any new film by Martin Scorsese is cause for celebration. And this one features performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Brendan Fraser, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons. It’s easily in our top most-anticipated streaming movies in 2023.

Peter Pan & Wendy

Disney Plus — TBD

Peter Pan & Wendy

This Disney Plus original film has been in the works for more than five years and is finally coming in 2023. A live-action retelling of Disney’s 1953 animated classic Peter Pan, Peter Pan & Wendy will follow the adventures of Peter and Wendy in Neverland, based on the play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up by J.M. Barrie.

Disney has had a relatively uneven track record with live-action remakes of its own classic films. Still, the thought of Jude Law as Captain Hook and of this timeless tale getting a new spin is certainly exciting. Director David Lowery has certainly proven himself capable with the dark fantasy epic The Green Knight and another children’s live-action update: Pete’s Dragon.
