FIFA World Cup has always been one of the biggest sporting events and Qatar 2022 was no different. Be it viewership numbers or online engagement, the World Cup gets people buzzing. The World Cup 2022 in Qatar was a good one for Twitter, as per Bruna Piovesan, senior manager, marketing, Twitter.
In a blog post, Piovesan said that “football fans across the globe came to Twitter to experience every exhilarating and emotional moment as it happened.”

Double the impressions of Tokyo 2020 Olympics

According to Piovesan, Twitter saw 147 billion impressions of the #WC2022 conversation globally. This number saw the impressions surpass the World Cup in 2018 and it was more than double the number of impressions of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. “Whether the crowd was reacting to a big goal, watching highlights, predicting the outcome of the next match, or celebrating the star players, fans came to Twitter to discuss all aspects of the game,” she said. Not just that but Twitter got an average of 2 million likes per day, and 226% more tweet impressions than the 2018 World Cup. Piovesan also said that FIFA generated record-breaking success across all its Twitter accounts, covering the World Cup on Twitter in seven languages.

No surprise that the final between Argentina and France was among the top moments on Twitter. The top five moments that generated the biggest peaks of Twitter conversation, measured in Tweets per minute (TPM), during the entire tournament:

The five most-mentioned teams on Twitter were Argentina, Brazil, France, Portugal and Croatia. Further, fans in Brazil sent more Tweets than any other country, followed by Japan, Argentina, the United States of America and France.
