EE customers face price hike this month but there’s a way to beat it

There’s some bad news for EE customers this month with the UK network bringing back controversial charges for using devices in Europe. Currently, Britons can use their UK allowance when they travel in the EU without fear of bigger bills when they arrive home but that’s all about to change with a fee of £2 per day being introduced.

Although the new fees won’t actually kick in until January 2022, the change to EE’s terms will come into effect from July 7.

So what does this actually mean and how can you avoid paying the new £2 charge when you travel?

EE has said that the new rules will only apply to new customers joining the network or existing users who switch to new a deal after the July deadline.

That means, as long as you buy a new contract now or switch to something different before this coming Wednesday you won’t face the penalty for sending messages and checking Facebook by the pool.

If your initial deal has ended and you don’t mind keeping your current handset then now is actually a pretty good time to opt for a new SIM.

EE has a number of offers including one which offers 160GB of 5G data for £20.

If you act fast, you’ll be able to use that speedy web access without paying anything extra when heading abroad.

Speaking about the changes an EE spokesperson said, “From January next year, EE will introduce a new flat fee of £2 a day for customers wishing to roam across 47 European destinations (with the exception of ROI which is included in domestic plans), allowing them to use their plan’s full data, minutes and texts allowance. This will apply only to new and upgrading customers signing up to EE from the 7th July 2021 and will support investment into our UK based customer service and leading UK network.

“Customers travelling abroad for longer will be able to use a 30-day Roam Abroad Pass. Essential plan customers will be able to take the Pass for £10, while Smart or Full Works plans customers are able to include the same pass as part of their plan.”

If your current deal doesn’t end until after July 7 then EE says you can add on a Smart Benefit when buying a new SIM or contract which can then be used to get free data when you travel.
