Google TV app will let you control your TV from your smartphone
Google is reportedly working on an update for the Google TV app (or Play Movies & TV) to bring in features to let you control your Android TV from the app itself. With this update, you will no longer need to hunt for the remote controller of your TV as you can perform all actions from the app itself. As per a report by 9to5 Google, Google may be bringing the Android TV remote option with the version 4.27 of the app.
There’s no official word from Google as of now and it seems Google is testing the feature. The remote feature is not fully developed yet and there may be some last minute tweaks.
The Google TV app for Android had earlier received a beta update that shows the functionality of turning your phone into a TV remote with the version 4.25 of the app. Now, in the new version 4.27, Google has improved it.
As per a report by XDA Developers, “To control a TV, you’ll first need to pair the TV to the app by selecting it from a list of available TVs. This will begin a pairing process, in which you’ll have to enter a 4-digit PIN code shown on your TV in the app.” Once the process is done, users will be able to use their smartphone as a remote control for an Android TV.
The idea behind the move, as per the report, is that the Google TV app will be able to connect through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It’s not as if Google didn’t have a remote control app earlier. Called Android TV Remote Control app, the app has been there on the Play Store for a while and was meant to turn your phone into a remote. However, the app hasn’t seen any updates in four years — since 2017 — which clearly means it’s not that functional with newer Android TVs.
