TL;DR

  • Google is rolling out a new update to the Google TV app on Android.
  • The update includes a new UI, improved recommendations, and more supported services.
  • It will begin rolling out to users in the US this week.

After Android TV received an update last week, Google is now tackling the Google TV app on Android. A new update to Google TV is rolling out to users this week, bringing support for more streaming services, live TV channels, and more.

First, and most noticeable, is the app’s refreshed interface. Google has reworked the For You tab, in particular, adding 16:9 widescreen posters for shows and movies at the top of the page. You can still browse top picks, but these are visible below this box. Additionally, Rotten Tomatoes scores now feature beneath each poster. Google believes this will make content discovery a little easier on the app.

“If you find something you’ve already seen, you can now pop into its details page to mark it as ‘watched’ to get updated recommendations in your For you tab in its place,” said Google in a press release.

This update forms part of the app’s more extensive reworked recommendation system. More rows of personalized recommendations will now feature in the app. This will also cater to users’ more specific interests, like “Sci-fi thrillers” or “What to watch if you crave a summer blockbuster.” The change should make Google TV feel a little more like Netflix and other streaming platforms.

Finally, Google TV is adding more streaming services to the platform, mostly appealing to kids. Google will add Cartoon Network, Discovery Plus, Viki, PBS Kids, and Boomerang with the update. Additionally, live TV channels from YouTube TV, Philo, and Fubo TV will also feature. These will join Google TV’s offering of 30 channels and services.
