Microsoft’s redesigned Paint for Windows 11 will bring improvement to tools and dark mode

Microsoft has confirmed working on a redesigned Paint app for Windows 11. The new update will borrow the design aesthetics from the entire Windows 11 user interface to make it look in line with the entire operating system and other apps. Also, this will be the first major update to the Paint app in ages.
The confirmation arrives as a tweet from Microsoft’s head of Windows and Devices, Panos Panay. He has dropped a teaser video of the new Paint app giving an early glimpse at upcoming changes to the app.
According to the teaser video, the new Paint app will bring improvements to font picker, brushes and will also include a dark mode. The redesigned interface now looks fresh and more usable compared to the older versions.
The video also shows a new quick picker which now shows different brushes and effects. The floating font toolbar with text formatting options, alignment and more, similar to Microsoft Word, is way better than the static one.
The tweet also confirms that the updated Paint app will first arrive for Windows Insider users in the Dev and Beta channels before arriving at the final rollout later this year.
Microsoft seems to have brought so many new features to the Paint app making it a much better drawing app than ever. However, features like layers and some more new tools like an improved selection tool would have made Paint a much better app for Windows 11 users.
There doesn’t appear to be options for layers, but this is the first major update to Paint since it gained the ribbon interface. Microsoft had been planning to remove Paint from Windows 10 at one point, before reversing course and keeping it as part of Windows. Instead, Microsoft has started removing 3D Paint from installations of Windows 10, a program that was designed to modernize and even replace the traditional Paint app.
It’s not clear exactly when Windows Insiders will be able to test out this new Paint design, but Panay says it will be available to test “soon.”
