Apple Watch can detect another serious heart disease apart from AFib – Times of India
Apple Watch can also detect arrhythmias other than Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) according to a new study published this week in the American Heart Association (AMA) journal. The new findings follow the results of the Apple Heart Study app that used data from Apple Watch to identify irregular heart rhythms, including those from potentially serious heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation. The company conducted this study in collaboration with Stanford Medicine to improve the technology used to detect and analyse irregular heart rhythms.
In that study, the irregular pulse detection algorithm in the Apple Watch was found to have a positive predictive value of 0.84 to identify atrial fibrillation. For secondary analysis, American Heart Association analysed participants who received an ambulatory ECG patch after index irregular pulse notification. AMA excluded participants with AFib identified on ECG patch and described the prevalence of other arrhythmias on the remaining participant ECG patches. The organisation also reported the proportion of participants self-reporting subsequent AFib diagnosis.
According to the analysis, participants with an irregular pulse notification on the Apple Watch and no AFib observed on ECG patch, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, mostly premature atrial contractions and premature ventricular contractions, were detected in 40% of participants.
If you want to turn on heart rate notifications on your Apple Watch you can open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone> Tap on My Watch> tap on Heart. After this you can pick an ideal BPM range and whenever your heart rate goes out of that threshold, you’ll receive a notification.
Launched this month, Apple Watch Series 7 does not get any new health sensors. However, a recent report from the Wall Street Journal claims that the company is developing features such as body temperature, blood pressure technology, advanced sleep tracking, blood glucose monitoring and many others. Since Apple launched its first Watch in 2015, the product is claimed to have saved lives.
