How to start one-on-one audio or video on Gmail via Google Chat
Google Chat (formerly known as Hangout) has received a new update that allows users to make one-on-one audio and video calls. The feature is a part of Google Chat integration in Gmail. The feature can be used to make individual audio or video calls to Gmail contact list.
Google Chat calling feature is currently rolling out to the Android and iOS version of Gmail. In the latest version of the app, users can now see a new phone and video icon at the top right corner of the personal chat windows. Users can click on either of the icons to initiate an individual call.

Pre-requistes:
- To make calls in Gmail, make sure that you’ve enabled Google Chat in Gmail
- Install the latest version of Gmail app on your smartphone
- Ensure the other user also has the latest version of Gmail and has enabled the Google Chat in Gmail
- Also note that this is a phased rollout, so it might take a while for the update to reach based on your location.
Steps to make individual calls using Google Chat in Gmail
Open Gmail app on your smartphone and tap on Chat option from the bottom ribbon
Select a contact and tap on it to open individual chat window
To make a call, tap on the phone or video icon at the top right corner
That’s it, the call will start going through. Once the user on the other end receives the call, you can start the conversation.
