apple: Future Apple iPhones may get this new camera lens – Times of India

Future Apple iPhones may sport a periscope lens system. As per a report by TheElec, South Korean firm Jahwa Electronics has revealed that it is planning to spend around $155 million to build production plants for new optical image stabilization (OIS) actuators. The report suggests that the size of spending plan hints that the firm has secured a new customer, likely Apple. The report has also revealed that the firm will begin supplying OIS actuators from its new facilities next year.
For those who do not know, Jahwa Electronics supplies optical image stabilization (OIS) actuators for the Samsung Galaxy S22 series smartphones as well. Previous reports reveal that Apple visited new facilities of the South Korean firm in the first half of 2021.
The Cupertino based tech giant usually demands exclusive production lines for its own parts and components. The report also suggests that the new facilities set to be built in Gumi would also require approval from Apple once they are finished. The OIS actuators set to be made at the new facilities will be likely for telephoto cameras.
As the process to begin the production of OIS actuators at the new facility may take a year to conclude, we can expect the first iPhone models to sport this technology in 2023.
Rumours around Apple iPhone with periscope lens have been in circulation since 2020. Known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first expected Apple iPhone 14 Pro to sport this camera feature, but now it expected the camera technology to arrive with the Pro models in iPhone 15 series. Similar prediction was also shared by analyst Jeff Pu.
Apple is also reportedly working on a new ‘folded’ camera technology that will allow users to enhance the zoom capabilities of their phones. As per a patent application spotted by Patently Apple, Apple has filed a new patent with US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the camera technology. Patent application titled “Zoom Lens and Imaging Apparatus” reveals technology that will use multiple adjustable lenses which will allow variable magnification.
