The latest report by market research firm IDC revealed that the worldwide tablet shipments reached 40.5 million units during the second quarter of 2022 (2Q22. As per the latest data the total tablet shipments reached 0.15 percent year on-year increase. On the other side, the Choromebooks witnessed another slump with decreasing shipments. The report adds that the shipments went down by 51.4 percentYoY with 6 million units worldwide in Q2 2022.
Reasons for the growth in tablet shipments
The IDC report adds that Smoother deployments into education projects and several promotional sales, such as the “618” online promotion days in China and Amazon’s Prime Day in the US, led to better-than-expected shipments in the quarter. The report also adds that new entrants in the category — Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme also performed well.
“There are several factors that are working in favor of tablets: one being the continued demand for tablets as cheaper alternatives to PCs. Also noteworthy is the proliferation of low-cost detachables, especially from new entrants in regions like Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China), that are tapping into the demand for devices for education purposes and disrupting the vendor dynamics”, adds the report.
Companies that performed well
Apple leads the tablet category with 31% market share. The second place is captured by Samsung with 18.1% market share. The third and fourth positions are captured by Amazon.com and Lenovo with 13.6% and 8.7% market share respectively. Huawei held the fifth position with 5.3% market share.
Reasons for the decline of Chromebooks
The IDC report adds that Chromebooks continued to decline with shipments down 51.4% year over year to 6 million units in 2Q22. The decline was expected as the inventory buildup is still being cleared out and demand in the education sector has slowed.
“While Chromebook shipments have trended down in the past few quarters, there’s still opportunity to be had as the pandemic has brought about positive changes to Chrome adoption. The need for remote learning accelerated schools’ plans to reach a 1:1 ratio for PCs to students and this ratio will likely continue to hold in the future and even if PC shipments decline in other categories, Chrome will continue at these elevated levels,” adds the report.
Top five Chromebook companies
Dell has topped the Chromebook segment with 25.5% market share. On the other hand, Acer and Lenovo captured the second and third position with 22.6% and 19.4% market share respectively. HP has captured the fourth spot with 15.6% market share and Samsung stands at the fifth spot with 6.2% market share.
