iPhone Weather app may get a news section with iOS 16.2 – Times of India

After the release of the stable version of iOS 16.1, Apple is testing the beta version of iOS 16.2. Testers have discovered that the new iOS beta release includes a news section in the Weather app. According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple’s News integration will add regional weather stories to the Weather app on iPhone. This change is also expected to arrive for the Weather app on iPad and Mac. However, the iOS 16.2 beta’s Apple News integration in Weather seems limited to some US cities and may even have mixed results. For example, in some cities like San Francisco, Alabama and Mississippi the Weather app on iPhone is showing weather stories while in places like New York and New Orleans the app is missing the news links.
Weather app Apple News section integration: More details
Apple’s Weather app for iPhone currently doesn’t let users customise the data tiles that are presented by the service. Moreover, the new beta version of iOS 16.2 also doesn’t offer any settings for users to disable the News integration on the app.

Even after deleting the News app, the Weather app in the current beta version will still show links that say: “Open in News”. Tapping these links will take you to the Apple News URL for that story on the web.
Apart from the Weather app, the company has cross-integrated another app with specific topics from Apple News. The Stocks app on iPhone also offers related business stories from Apple News depending on the companies you follow.

The report adds that Apple might allow users to hide these stories in the coming days. Apple’s News app has started showing ads (including News+ subscribers) and the Weather app integration can become another gateway for the Cupertino giant to push ads in its apps.
