Explained: Samsung’s Flex Hybrid concept device, how it works and more – Times of India

Samsung, which is one of the biggest players in OLED panel production, demonstrated different concepts of foldable displays at CES 2022. The South Korea-based tech giant has now announced a new prototype device called Flex Hybrid which sports a display that’s both foldable and slidable. The company has explained how this new conceptual “smart mobile device” will work. The prototype’s left side can be unfolded to reveal the display. Meanwhile, users can also slide the display outwards from the right side to get even more screen space. Samsung is set to demonstrate this concept device at CES 2023 along with a new 17-inch slidable display and automotive panels designed for self-driving cars. Here we have detailed all the things we know about Samsung’s new Flex Hybrid concept device.
Samsung’s Flex Hybrid: Key highlights and how will it work
Samsung claims that the Flex Hybrid concept mobile device has a 10.5-inch screen which can be expanded up to 12.4 inches. As the display expands the device will also adjust the screen ratio from 4:3 to 16:10, respectively. However, the company hasn’t mentioned any other specs or details about the device like — resolution or peak brightness.
The new concept display is expected to be eventually used in a foldable smartphone. This new display concept will help users to unfold their devices to offer a small tablet-style experience. Users can then further un-slid the device to enjoy a film or game on a larger screen.

How Samsung made this device
Samsung Display has been showing off concept devices for some years now. The company even released their foldable phones for the general public which was also initially demonstrated as a concept device. The new Flex Hybrid prototype device is also built upon these concept devices.
In May 2022, the company also showcased various foldable and slidable concepts at the Display Week expo. However, none of these concepts combined foldable and slidable screens in the same device as the latest one. It is also important to note that Samsung is yet to release any of these more advanced displays in a consumer-ready product. This means that it will be a while before the company rolls out the Flex Hybrid concept and reach the masses.
Other concept displays from Samsung
Apart from the new Flex Hybrid concept device, Samsung will also show off a pair of larger 17-inch slidable prototypes that are designed for laptops (expected to be released in the coming days). In September 2023, the company debuted these concept displays during Intel’s Innovation keynote. CES 2023 will be the first event where Samsung will publicly showcase the latest display for the first time. The 13-inch Flex Slidable Solo can expand in one direction, while the 14-inch Flex Slidable Duet can expand both ways. Both displays can be expanded up to 17.3 inches in total.
Furthermore, Samsung will also offer the first look at a new series of displays that are designed for self-driving cars. These displays called digital cockpits will combine 34-inch and 15.6-inch panels. Samsung has not mentioned when these displays may appear in a consumer-ready product.
