Apple: Apple back in ‘Top 5’ in India’s PC market, beats Asus – Times of India

Apple entered the list of top 5 PC vendors in India, as per latest report by research company IDC. The Cupertino giant entered the top 5 in the Indian PC market after almost two years. Apple ranked at No. 5 during the fourth quarter of (Q4-2022) the year 2022. The company replaced Asus for the fifth spot as it witnessed positive traction, growing by 10.9% on a year-over-year (YoY) basis, a report has said. Incidentally, Apple is the only company that saw an increase in shipments, though marginally, in the last quarter of the calendar year 2022.
According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, the India traditional PC market, inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations, witnessed a steep YoY decline of 28.5% in Q4-2022 (October-December).

In Q4-2022, desktops continued their upward trend, but notebooks declined by YoY 37.8%. IDC says that inflation and low sentiment impacted the consumer segment, resulting in a decline of 27.4%. In the enterprise segment, delayed orders and inventory challenges led to a decline of 42.6% YoY.
“In the consumer segment, the year started on a positive note with strong double-digit growth in the first half of the year. Demand started to taper off in the second half of the year and eventually plunged in Q4-2022 despite positive online sales in Q3-2022, as channel inventory piled up,” said Bharath Shenoy, Senior Market Analyst, IDC India.
However, when it comes to shipments in full year, IDC says that PC shipments grew by 0.3% year-over-year (YoY) in 2022 to 14.9 million units.

Biggest gainers in the PC market in 2022
As per the market research firm, the government and education segments gained the most in 2022, growing YoY at 117.6% and 28.3%, respectively, but enterprises fell by 5.9% YoY.
Desktops and workstations grew 32.3% YoY and 24.7% YoY, respectively, but the volume driver notebook category declined by 8.4% YoY, primarily due to softening demand across segment groups.
When it comes to the premium notebooks, the shipments declined by 7.9% YoY in the commercial segment but grew by 14.6% YoY on the consumer side due to the continued popularity of premium notebooks and Apple’s MacBooks. The online channel declined by 9.4% YoY in 2022 with 37.5% in Q4-2022.

IDC says that Apple has been consistently clocking strong numbers since the last few quarters and finally managed to pip Asus to the 5th spot in Q4-2022. Apple was the only brand to register a positive growth in the quarter where all the major vendors focused on inventory correction leading to reduced shipments.
Apple was one of the top 5 PC shipment companies in the first quarter of 2021 with a 5.4% market share and tied for the fifth position with Taiwanese multinational company Asus. It was on the fourth spot in the fourth quarter of 2020 when it captured 8.7% share registering 31.3% YoY growth, according to Gartner.
