Amazon announces a new e-ink tablet called the Kindle Scribe

Amazon is holding an event today to announce some new products. One of the first items that were revealed during the event was the company’s new e-ink tablet called the Kindle Scribe.

The Kindle Scribe is built to be both a reading and writing device that merges the best parts of Amazon’s Kindle tablets and e-readers. It is the company’s latest stab at trying to achieve its end goal with the Kindle line — to create a device that’s as versatile and easy to interact with as paper.

The new tablet boasts a 10.2-inch e-ink screen and comes equipped with a stylus that attaches to either side of the device. Users will be able to choose between two different stylus options. These options include a “Basic Pen” or a “Premium Pen” that will be $30 dollars more. The premium pen will feature a customizable shortcut button and an eraser sensor on the top.

In addition, the Scribe will be packed with new note-taking capabilities. For example, a user will be able to tap on a passage and write a note similar to how you’d highlight or type a note with an on-screen keyboard.

For battery life, Amazon doesn’t measure the range in hours, but in weeks. According to the company, the Scribe will provide up to 12 weeks of battery life. This measurement is based on using the tablet to read every day for a half hour. If you instead write for a half-hour, the battery life is expected to drop down to about three weeks.

The Kindle Scribe is out for preorder starting today. If you want to pick one up for yourself, it will cost $339.99. Amazon says that the device is expected to roll out before this holiday season.
