Amazon job cuts: E-commerce giant lays off Indian techies in the US – Times of India
Amazon lays off Indian techies in the US
Among the affected employees were multiple Indian-origin techies who were reportedly working in the US with an H1-B visa. One of them was Saurabh Vaidya who was a part of the Alexa Privacy team and was working as an Applied Scientist at Amazon’s Greater Seattle office.
The former Amazon employee updated his LinkedIn account to confirm that the company has sacked him and is in urgent need to find a new job in the US. Vaidya, who started working for Amazon as an intern in June 2020, also noted that the company has laid off his entire team.
Apart from him, several other employees also took to LinkedIn to share their stories and look for new jobs. Some of them also mentioned having limited time to search for and get a new role in the country due to their immigration status.
Amazon job cuts: How has it affected the company
Amazon is planning to cut 10,000 jobs which make up nearly 3% of the company’s 3 lakh-plus corporate workforce. The company’s market value also went down by 2% after the layoff news came out.
Other major tech giants including Apple, Meta, Twitter and others have either announced layoffs or have stopped hiring due to the ongoing economic downturn. Reduced consumer spending, increase interest rates and a spike in worldwide inflation are all reasons for this economic crisis.
