TL;DR

  • EA has announced that it’s shutting down Apex Legends Mobile.
  • The title launched roughly nine months ago and even earned awards from Apple and Google.

Apex Legends Mobile launched back in May 2022, doing a solid job of distilling the Apex Legends experience onto the small screen. In fact, the action title even won game of the year awards from both Apple and Google.

Now, EA and developer Respawn Entertainment have made the surprising announcement that Apex Legends Mobile is shutting down.

The two companies blamed content woes for the shutdown:

Following a strong start, the content pipeline for Apex Legends Mobile has begun to fall short of that bar for quality, quantity, and cadence. It is for this reason, after months of working with our development partner, that we have made the mutual decision to sunset our mobile game.

Gamers will have 90 days to play the title and spend any previously purchased in-game currency. The title will no longer be playable at 4PM PDT (7PM ET) on May 1, 2023.

The companies also confirmed that they will not be issuing any refunds for real world purchases. So those expecting the same kind of generosity as Google displayed for the Stadia shutdown will be disappointed.

Nevertheless, EA noted during its Q3 earnings call that the company has “plans to reimagine a connected Apex Mobile experience in the future.” In other words, it certainly sounds like the franchise will come back to mobile at some point.

Apex Legends Mobile isn’t the only EA-backed mobile title to be canned though, as the company also used the earnings call to announce that Battlefield Mobile is shutting down. The game was only available as a soft-launched title in several markets.
