Apple delays AR glasses, an affordable mixed-reality headset on the way – Times of India

While the first mixed-reality headset of Apple, the “Reality Pro“, is nowhere to be seen except sketches, rumours about what is to come next are already doing the rounds of the internet.
The pair of augmented-reality glasses that Apple was working on to replace the iPhones have now been postponed over “technical challenges”, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
Soon after entering the mixed-reality space with its first-ever headset, Apple had planned to bring that AR glasses, but now the plan is put on indefinite hold or possibly has been shelved.
Apple’s mixed-reality headset to come in “Pro” and “One” variants
Instead of the glasses, Apple plans to release an affordable mixed-reality headset, a follow-up to its first mixed-reality headset, the Reality Pro, which is expected to be announced in Spring this year.
The $3000 price tag of the upcoming mixed-reality headset would make it a niche product. So, Gurman believes that Apple would come up with a rather affordable follow-up, the “Reality One,” priced around $1500, to fight off the likes of Meta, Oculus and others.
While the Reality Pro is said to harness the power of Apple silicon for Macs, the Reality One may come with much more modest chips found in the iPhones. As for when it might come, Gurman says that the cheaper version might be unveiled in 2024 or 2025.
Earlier, the trademark filings have pointed to the dual-device strategy of Apple for its AR/VR segment. In the documents, two names appeared — Reality Pro and Reality One. While the “Pro” is reserved for the headset coming this year, “One” could be used for the affordable version of the headset coming later.
If reports are to be believed, the Reality Pro would come with the M2-series chip, paired with a coprocessor to handle AR/VR chops. The headset is said to have high-resolution displays with more than 10 cameras.
