apple: Intel CEO wants to win back Apple’s business, here’s how – Times of India

It has almost been a year now since Apple ‘ditched’ Intel to make its own silicon-based processor for Mac range of computers. In November 2020, Apple unveiled the M1 chip and made it clear that it wants to move away from Intel processors. As Apple gears to launch its second-generation of M1 processor, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has hinted that he and the company aren’t ready to give up on Apple as a customer.
In an interview with Axios, Gelsinger said that he hopes to win back “this piece of their business” in reference to Apple’s processor. “Apple decided they could do a better chip themselves than we could. And, you know, they did a pretty good job. So what I have to do is create a better chip than they can do themselves. I would hope to win back this piece of their business, as well as many other pieces of business, over time,” he said in the interview.
Gelsinger also said that Intel has to ensure that their products — processors in this case — are better than Apple. “I’ve gotta make sure our products are better than theirs, that my ecosystem is more open — and vibrant — than theirs, and that we create a more compelling reason for developers and users to land on Intel-based products. So I’m gonna fight hard to win Apple’s business in this area.”
When Apple unveiled the M1 processor last year, it gave a broad timeline to when its products will move from Intel to its own chipset. Last year, it was the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini that were launched with M1 processor. In 2021, we have seen the iMac and the iPad Pro move to M1 processor as well.
At its Unleashed event on October 18, Apple is expected to launch new MacBook Pro variants with a new processor — rumoured to be called M1X or M1 Pro.
While Gelsinger might be bullish about winning back Apple’s business, it is rather difficult to see the Cupertino-based giant move back to Intel for multiple reasons. Apple has control over all hardware components and software with the M1 processor. Secondly, the M1 processor has been acclaimed by critics and users both, so unless Apple has radically different plans, it may be rather tough for Intel to win back Apple.
