apple ipad: Apple may use more durable and scratch-resistant material for the next-gen iPad – Times of India

Apple has been using aluminium and/or stainless steel alloy for the iPad casings for quite some time. That could change as the tech giant plans to bring in a harder, stronger material to enhance the durability of its tablet, which would be titanium-based. As per a report by GizChina, Apple could be thinking about using a titanium-based alloy for the next generation iPad casings, with the iPad Pro reportedly kept out of the project because of its support for wireless charging.
A titanium alloy is said to be harder and more scratch-resistant than stainless steel and aluminium ones. For now, the inclusion of the new alloy is expected to happen with the next-gen iPads only, and if such a development takes place, the price of an already pricey tablet is going to shoot up. It remains to be seen if Apple also makes the changes to the casing with the entry-level iPad and not increase the price a lot as that would make it more expensive and hence, could make for a lesser number of sales.
Apple is already using titanium on the casing material on the Apple Watch (making it the costliest Apple Watch too) and the Apple Card. That the company is seriously considering expanding the use of titanium alloy to its other devices is evident from the number of patents it has applied for the same. And the new alloy could very well replace the old one on the future MacBooks and even iPhones. For the iPhone, the titanium alloy could be used only on the middle frame for now, with the rear glass back left undisturbed to facilitate wireless charging.
