Apple iPhone 15 Pro could come with A17 Bionic chipset and feature USB-C instead of Lightning | Digit

Last month, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple released the iPhone 14 lineup, including the vanilla iPhone 14, the new entrant iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, for the first time in a few years, Apple saved its latest A16 Bionic chipset for the Pro models, shipping the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus with last year’s A15 Bionic. Now, a report from TrendForce suggests that the company will follow a similar approach with the iPhone 15 series that is supposed to come out in 2023.

iPhone 15 expected specifications

As per the report, “Apple will maintain a four new model release schedule featuring two processors to further differentiate between the standard and the high-end models.” This means that Apple will release four new smartphones as a part of the iPhone 15 series. Based on the iPhone 14 series models, the iPhone 15 series could also come with two non-Pro variants and two Pro variants. Additionally, since the lineup is expected to come with two processors, there is a good chance that non-Pro iPhone 15 variants will ship with A16 Bionic, and the Pro iPhone 15 variants will feature the latest and the greatest A17 Bionic chipset.

From what it looks like, major improvements to the hardware will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the report also talks about 8GB of RAM on the Pro models. Besides this, Apple could make “camera specifications improvements, including upgrading its main camera to 8P and use a periscope lens in the Pro Max model.” Last but not least, the company’s 5G modem is not expected to debut until 2024, so Apple might stick with Qualcomm’s 5G modem for the iPhone 15 lineup.

Apple could shift to USB-C from the iPhone 15 series

Another highlight of the upcoming iPhone series is the switch from Lightning to USB-C ports. Earlier this week, the European Union announced that companies who wish to sell electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, headphones or any other gadgets would have to use a USB Type-C port. As a part of the law, all companies are given a directive to switch from Micro USB or Lighting ports to USB-C by 2024. Hence, Apple has no choice but to comply with the guidelines provided by the EU. However, the TrendForce report mentions USB-C ports in reference to the iPhone 15; hence, there is a good chance the iPhone 15 series will feature a USB-C port.
