Apple may have started work on a Macbook with foldable screen

TL;DR

  • Apple has reportedly started work on a 20-inch foldable device.
  • This could be a Macbook with a folding screen.
  • Apple would join Asus and Lenovo in offering a PC with a folding display.

Foldable phones and laptops with folding screens have been available on the market for a while now. Apple has been noticeably absent in this arena though, but it sounds like the company is now in the early stages of developing a rather intriguing foldable.

Apple has started working on a 20-inch foldable device, according to The Elec. More specifically, the screen is tipped to measure in at 20.25-inches when fully unfolded.

This size means it’s definitely not a foldable phone, and the Korean outlet believes this could instead be a Macbook with a foldable screen. It suggests that the device could offer a 15.3-inch display when folded, broadly in line with a laptop.

Opinion: Foldable laptops make more sense than foldable phones

It wouldn’t be the first time we see a laptop with a folding screen though. Lenovo launched the X1 Fold back in 2020, which was the first laptop with a folding display. It then offered an upgraded model earlier this year, offering a 16.3-inch screen when unfurled and a 12-inch panel when used as a laptop. Asus also launched the Zenbook 17 Fold earlier this year, bringing a 17.3-inch screen when unfolded and a 12.5-inch panel when folded in laptop mode.

Otherwise, The Elec also claims Apple is working on a foldable device to replace the iPad Mini series, with a targeted launch date of 2025. Either way, it sounds like the company will be very late to the foldable party compared to the likes of Samsung. But we’re still keen to see how a future Apple foldable will differ from the rest of the pack.
