After years of rumours, the mixed-reality headset of Apple, apparently named “Reality Pro,” is inching closer to reality. It is expected to launch in Spring, which means around March and June. But instead of showing it at WWDC, which happens in June every year, Apple could unveil its mixed reality headset ahead of its annual developer’s conference.
A spring launch, and fall release for the “Reality Pro”
In his weekly newsletter, Power On, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that he’s being told that after much delays, Apple plans to launch the headset in spring, in line with what analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also suggested that the mixed-reality headset would launch in spring.
However, a launch in spring does not mean that it will be ready to buy immediately. The headset would make it to the customers later this year in the fall, says Gurman.
The Cupertino giant has also finalised the name for the operating system of the headset, internally codenamed “Borealis.” Earlier, the operating system was referred to as “RealityOS,” but it will ship with the name “XrOS.”
“Reality Pro” already in the hands of developers
Gurman says that Apple has already shown off the headset to a small number of “high-profile developers,” allowing them to get a head start on the development of third-party apps. Later at WWDC, Apple may tell developers more about the platform, giving them time for development until the release.
According to a report from The Information, the headset will be reminiscent of ski goggles and will have an array of cameras to enable augmented and virtual reality experiences.
Apple is expecting to position the mixed-reality headset as the“hot new introduction for this year.” However, its efforts on the headset have slowed down the development of projects, including the software. So, 2023 might not be the year full of astonishing launches, but minor upgrades, except Macs may finally complete its transition to in-house M-series chips.
