Apple may soon part ways with Samsung, here’s why – Times of India
Apple plans to make displays in-house for its devices as soon as 2024, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. After ditching Intel in 2020, and with plans to break up with Qualcomm and Broadcom, Apple looks to reduce further reliance on Samsung, LG, and others that supply displays for iPhones, Macs, and more.
Currently, Apple uses displays designed and made by a number of vendors, including Samsung, LG, and BOE, for iPhones, Macs, and other products. Gurman says that Apple will still rely on third-party vendors to manufacture the panels, but they will be using the design and specifications provided by Apple.
Apple Watch could be one of the first devices to use the in-house mini LED display
Citing people familiar with the development, the report says that Apple plans to put its custom display first in the higher-end Apple Watch models, probably Apple Watch Ultra, as early as next year. This will also mark a shift from OLED to mini LED panels designed in-house. Later, Apple plans to use in-house displays on other devices, including iPhone.
Apple planned to release iPhones with custom displays in 2020
Bloomberg reports that Apple has been pursuing in-house custom display panels since 2018, and planned to release the first ship in-house displays with iPhone, say people involved in the development. However, the project reportedly faced delays due to high cost and technical challenges, forcing the company to first make a small display, as for Apple Watch that may come out in 2024 or 2025.
These microLED panels developed in-house will reportedly offer more brightness, vibrant colours, and legibility. As per people who have seen them, the content appears like it is painted on top of the glass.
The transition to an in-house display could initially result in a limited supply of the Apple Watch.
