Apple refreshes Mac mini with M2 and M2 Pro chip options

Alongside the new MacBook Pros, Apple today refreshed the Mac mini with the second-generation Apple silicon, coming in two options – M2 and M2 Pro.
While there is nothing new to see outside, internally, the Mac mini has received a hardware update. With the Mac mini (2020), only one option was available – the M1 chip – with an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU. But now, the Mac mini comes in two flavours – M2 chip and M2 Pro chip.
The design remains the same, the Mac mini being an aluminium enclosure with all the ports on the rear.
Mac mini with M2 chip: What does it offer
The M2 chip includes an 8-core CPU, a 10-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. With the M2 chip, the Mac mini can now support up to 24GB of unified memory having 100GB/s of bandwidth. The internal storage tops out at 1TB. The M2 chip promises image editing processes to be 50 per cent faster and adds ProRes acceleration.
Compared to the Intel Core i7-powered Mac mini, the Mac mini M2 promises to offer up to 22x faster machine learning image upscaling in Pixelmator Pro. Also, the complex time rendering in Final Cut Pro is promised to be now 9.8x faster than the last Intel-powered Mac mini, according to Apple.
Another update is to the wireless connectivity, as the Mac mini now supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 included.
The selection of ports remains the same as the M1-powered Mac mini. There is a Gigabit Ethernet port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI, two USB-A ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The M2 chip-powered Mac mini starts at Rs 59,999 in India.
Mac mini with M2 Pro chip: What does it offer
Aside from updating the MacBook Pros with the ‘Pro’ flavour of the Apple silicon, the Mac mini is now also coming with an option for the M2 Pro chip.
The M2 Pro chip comes with up to a 10-core CPU, up to a 19-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, which is promised to be 40 per cent faster than the one inside the M1 chip. The M2 Pro offers support for up to 32GB of memory with 200GB/s of bandwidth, double that of the M2. As for storage, the M2 Pro-powered Mac mini starts at 512GB and maxes out at 8TB.
The Mac mini with M2 Pro promises to offer 15 times the gaming performance than the fastest Intel-based Mac mini. Compared to the M1 Mac mini, the M2 Pro chip-powered Mac mini is said to offer an improvement of up to 2.8 per cent in the Resident Evil: Village.
On the M2 Pro-powered Mac mini, Apple has added two extra Thunderbolt 4 ports, apart from the others on the M2-powered variant. Meanwhile, the wireless connectivity options are the same as the M2 variant – WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
The M2 Pro-powered Mac mini starts at Rs 1,29,900.
