Apple scraps M2 Extreme, moves ahead with M2 Ultra for Mac Pro

There will not be the “M2 Extreme” variant of the much anticipated Mac Pro. Instead, the top-end Mac will come with the M2 Ultra, says Mark Gurman of Bloomberg in his newsletter Power On.
The “Extreme” variant of the M2 chip was reported to be a dual M2 Ultra, having 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores. However, the cost related to the development and complexity of the project made Apple shelve the plan for an “Extreme” chip. Gurman notes that it would have cost $10,000, which would have made it a niche product, that may not have been worth all money and effort going into it.
Apple Silicon Mac Pro to offer some level of Mac Pro customisation
After being once pushed back, the first Apple Silicon-based Mac Pro was touted to come in two variants – an M2 Ultra and two M2 Ultra paired together, otherwise known as M2 Extreme. But, since the M2 Extreme is not happening, the Mac Pro will have the M2 Ultra chip beneath, and it would also offer easy memory and storage expansion.
Update on next-gen Mac mini and MacBook Pros
The second-gen Mac mini would come in two variants – M2 and M2 Pro. Meanwhile, the MacBook Pros – 14 inches and 16 inches – are expected to release in early 2023 – with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips.
Apple has been planning to come out with Apple Silicon-powered high-end iMac Pro, but it has been delayed over the same reason as the Mac Pro.
New external monitors with Apple Silicon are under development
Earlier this year, Apple launched the Studio Display, a companion to its Mac Studio. Now, Gurman has it that Apple is working on a few external monitors that would be similar to Studio Display, which will have an Apple Silicon, possibly an old iPhone chip.
One of the monitors under development is said to be the update to Pro Display XDR, launched back in 2019. The monitor is expected to come after the Mac Pro since it is still in the early phases of development.
Apple plans to move to Asia for Mac Pro, but not China
In 2019, forced by Trump, Apple decided to move a fraction of Mac Pro production to the US, but now the Cupertino giant plans to shift back the production to Asia, but not China. Gurman says that the new Mac Pro will be built in Vietnam, where the company may soon begin production of MacBooks and Apple Watches.
