Apple takes first steps towards ‘Made in India’ AirPods – Times of India

Apple has been assembling iPhones in India for many years now. There had been reports that suggested Apple could assemble the iPad in India. It looks like it’s the AirPods and not the iPad, which could be the second Apple product to be assembled in India. A report by Bloomberg suggests that Apple has started making components for AirPods in India.
To reduce dependency on China
Jabil Inc, which is a key Apple supplier, has started to ship the AirPods enclosures to China and Vietnam, as per the report by Bloomberg. AirPods are manufactured in China and Vietnam but this is the first time Apple has relied on an Indian supplier to produce anything related to the AirPods.
Just to be clear, Jabil Inc is a US-based company but has a manufacturing facility in Pune. It is at this facility, as per the report, AirPods enclosures — or the plastic bodies — are being made and then sent to China and Vietnam.
The move could be part of Apple’s long-term plan to reduce dependency on China. In the last few months, several reports have suggested that Apple could look to move some of its production to other countries, including India. Towards the end of last year, China’s strict Covid-19 lockdown policies severely impacted the production of the iPhone 14 Pro series. Reports revealed that Apple was staring at a significant drop in shipments because of the issues in China.
An earlier report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple is looking to expand its production capabilities in mainly two countries — India and Vietnam. In Vietnam, Apple has two partners — Luxshare and Inventec — which are the two main assembly partners for AirPods and HomePods line of products. Apple has reportedly already told its manufacturing partners to make an attempt to do more work outside of China. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that India could see 40-45% of iPhone production.
India does come with a fair amount of challenges for Apple. According to the WSJ report, since each state has a different government, companies are saddled with too many obligations before actually getting into building products. A former Foxconn executive was quoted as saying “India is the Wild West in terms of consistent rules and getting stuff in and out.”
