Apple TV 4K 2022 drops Lightning…and the price

TL;DR

  • The new Apple TV 4K for 2022 has upgraded internals, including more storage.
  • The remote also no longer has a Lightning connector, bringing USB-C to the line.
  • You can order the new streaming box today for a November 4 release. It starts at $129.

If you need to stream media to your television, there are plenty of cheap options out there. However, as with most other things, you tend to get what you pay for with cheap media streamers. If you want smooth operation, all the features, and plenty of perks, you need to pony up some dough.

That’s why Apple has been able to command high prices for its line of streamers. However, the Apple TV 4K for 2022 actually drops the price significantly all while offering a slew of upgrades.

The biggest change this year is the abandonment of the Lightning port. The new TV 4K remote will have a USB-C port for charging, representing Apple’s required shift to use a universal connector. This is great news for people who want an Apple TV 4K but aren’t in the Apple ecosystem otherwise.

Inside, the Apple TV 4K for 2022 has the A15 Bionic chip, making it more powerful than ever. It now supports HDR10+ and even has more storage, with the base model coming with 64GB (there isn’t a 32GB model anymore).

Finally, the new TV 4K has a lower starting price. You can grab a model without an Ethernet port for just $129, a drastic drop from the $179 starting price of the previous generation. If you need Ethernet, you can grab an upgraded model for $149 — which is still cheaper than the previous-gen entry model. The Ethernet model also increases the storage to 128GB.

You can buy the new Apple TV 4K today and it will hit store shelves on November 4.
