Apple TV users may need an iPhone or iPad to accept iCloud terms and conditions – Times of India
According to a report by 9to5Mac, a recent tweet went viral after it claimed that the Apple TV software has introduced a new limitation. After the latest software update, tvOS may ask users to have access to an iPhone or iPad to perform certain actions like — accepting the new iCloud terms and conditions or updating their Apple ID settings. The tweet shows that accepting new iCloud terms and conditions on Apple TV now requires an iOS device.

Setting up an Apple TV
Previously, users were able to access Apple TV without needing any other Apple hardware. Users were allowed to set up the Apple TV, install apps, and make purchases completely independently. Sometimes users needed a web browser on a PC to perform the typical Apple ID management duties (if necessary). However, there are some tasks (that became more prevalent with the tvOS 16 update) that Apple TV expects users to do on an iOS device which is signed in with the same account.
The tweet claims that Apple TV doesn’t allow users to read and accept the new terms on the TV sets, instead it now asks them to use an iOS device to do it. Moreover, the iOS device needs to run iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 or later.
How will this change affect users
Apart from users who don’t have an iPhone or iPad, this change will also affect users who possess an old iPad or iPhone. Apple TV may ask customers to ‘update Apple ID settings’ by bringing their iPhone near the Apple TV. However, in both cases, these prompts can be temporarily dismissed. But they seem to recur frequently until they have been dealt with.
Additionally, some system features may not be available until they are resolved. For that, Apple TV users need to have an iPhone or iPad (running the latest OS version) handy or there’s no other way to deal with it. With these limitations, Apple TV can’t be considered a standalone device.
