Apple users, updating to iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16 will patch this security flaw – Times of India

As part of iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16, Apple has released a patch for a zero day kernel vulnerability that could be used by hackers to run malicious codes on devices. The exploits may be in active use, Apple has said. A zero day vulnerability is a software or system vulnerability that gets discovered by hackers and other cybercriminals before the vendor/ developer. The developers may later issue a patch for it to lessen the security risk but till the time it remains unpatched, all the devices using the software are at risk of being under cyberattacks
Apple notes:
“Available for: iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later
Impact: An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.
CVE-2022-42827: an anonymous researcher”
Key iOS 16.1 updates
The iOS 16.1 update adds the iCloud Shared Photo Library which is a separate library that lets you share photos and videos with up to five other people. There are Library filters for quickly switching between viewing the Shared Library, your Personal Library, or both libraries together
Now, everyone can add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete photos with the help of shared edits and permissions. With the Sharing toggle in Camera, you can send captured snaps straight to the Shared Library, or share automatically with other participants via Bluetooth.
Live Activities from third party apps have also arrived in the Dynamic Island and on the Lock Screen for iPhone 14 Pro models. The new update adds support for Apple Fitness+ on the iPhone even without the Apple Watch.
The iOS 16.1 update also brings Clean Energy Charging, a new setting which Apple claims will help reduce your carbon footprint “by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available”. The iOS 16.1 update also fixes several bugs.
