apple: What Apple may be planning for Mac users in 2022 – Times of India

Back in November 2020, Apple announced its first silicon processor called the M1. That was the start of Apple ‘breaking’ away from Intel processors and the roadmap was to have its own processors in the entire Mac line up. Now, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is on track to shift from Intel to M1 processors by June 2022, right in time for WWDC. Also, there could be many new Mac models that could arrive in 2022, including an “entry-level” MacBook Pro.

New Mac Pros, new processors

Gurman says that Apple has lined up a new Mac Pros will be based on the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The two new processors were unveiled with new MacBook Pros in October 2021. As for what models can we expect, Gurman said that there could be a “smaller Mac Pro with up to 40 CPU cores and 128 graphics cores, a new Mac mini, and a large-screened iMac Pro.” In his weekly newsletter, Gurman said that the transition from Intel to its own silicon chips could be complete by June.
Further, a new processor — likely to be called M2 — could also arrive in 2022 but Gurman says that it will be “a marginally faster version of the M1 chip from late 2020.” Interestingly, according to Gurman, it will be an upgrade on the M1 processor rather than the M1 Pro and M1 Max. So the CPU core count might remain the same but Apple could give a stronger GPU. “That likely means nine or 10 GPU cores, an upgrade from the current seven or eight graphics core options on the M1,” says Gurman in his newsletter. The jump, according to Gurman, from M1 to M2 will be like Apple does with the iPhone processors every year.

New MacBook Air, MacBook Pro

Rumours have been rife about Apple redesigning the MacBook Air and Gurman corroborates that. Not only that, but a new “entry-level” MacBook Pro could also be introduced by Apple in 2022. Apple hasn’t updated the MacBook Air since November 2020 and it is expected that the 2022 MacBook Air will see a complete redesign of one of Apple’s most popular laptops.
