Apple wins more patents for its rumoured mixed reality headset – Times of India

Apple is reportedly gearing up to enter into a new market this year with its first AR/VR headset. The device is one of the most talked-about products from the company. Apple is not known to reveal anything about its upcoming products but the rumours around the company’s AR/VR headset have been in circulation for a while now. As per a latest report by PatentlyApple, the company has been granted two mixed reality headset patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
According to the report, one of the patents reveals a head-mounted device (HMD) faceplate with infrared one-way mirror finish. The application talks about ski-goggles or sunglasses-like headwear with protective casing through which people won’t be able to see the user’s eyes. The report suggests that the one-way mirror finish is designed to hide various cameras, gaze tracking systems, and more from public view.
The other patent application discovered by PatentlyApple talks about an HMD charging system that includes a display, power storage device, and receiving coils. The receiving coils may be for charging the headset.
As per previous report by known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuom the tech giant will likely launch the gadget in late 2022 with limited supplies. As per the report, he believes that the shipment of the product won’t begin until the first quarter of 2023, suggesting that only a limited number of headsets will be available to customers at the time of the launch. A paper shared Display Supply Chain (DSCC) last week also suggested the same launch timeline for the headset.
The report also revealed that the upcoming device will have a three-display configuration. As per the reports, Apple will combine two Micro OLED displays and one AMOLED panel in the headset. According to a previous report by Ming-Chi Kuo, the Apple headset will weigh between 300 and 400 grams. He also said that the headset will be able to deliver performance compared to the M1 chipsets that the company uses in the MacBooks. Other rumors suggest that the device will also be equipped with advanced sensors for environment and gesture detection.
