Apple’s biggest iPhone manufacturer’s $500 million bet on India – Times of India
According to the report, which cites documents filed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange, Foxconn has invested half a billion dollars in India to ramp up production capacity in the country. The report comes days after The Wall Street Journal suggested that Apple is serious about moving out production out of China.
As for Foxconn, it has been assembling iPhones in India for many years. The new iPhone 14 model is also being assembled in India by Foxconn. Foxconn has been assembling — starting iPhone 11 — for Apple in India since 2019 and has been expanding its capacity. The new investment, however, could be a move to assembling other products as well.
Looking beyond the iPhone
A recent report by CNBC revealed that Apple has held discussions with the government of India about exploring the possibility of assembling iPad in India. The report states that at this moment Apple has no concrete plans of doing so but may look at India as an alternative to other countries for the iPad assembly.
As per the report, sources have suggested that it will not be an easy task to move the assembly of iPad to India. The iPad is a rather complex device to assemble and there is concern over the “lack of highly skilled talent and individuals with expertise” to do so. This could be a roadblock and delay Apple’s plans of assembling the iPad in India.
Foxconn’s latest $500 million investment could change that and see Apple looking at India even more seriously as a hub for production than it has in the past.
