Apple’s lead in global 5G smartphone market shrinks, Samsung and Vivo grow: Report – Times of India

The 5G smartphone market is a relatively new domain and handset makers are trying to make a mark in this market.
iPhone maker Apple has been leading the global 5G market with a wide margin but in Q1 2021, the company has seen a drop in its share as compared to the previous quarter, according to the latest report by Strategy Analytics.
The report claims that at the end of Q1 2021, Apple’s share in the global 5G smartphone market has dropped to 29.8% as compared to the 40.7% market share at then end of Q4 2020.
The company is still leading the market as the second highest shipments of 5G smartphones were from BBK-owned smartphone brand Oppo, making it capture 15.8% share of the 5G smartphone market worldwide. Oppo’s quarter-over-quarter performance has also been good as it has grown by 55%.
The third spot was taken by Vivo, another BBK-owned brand. Vivo had a bigger quarter over quarter growth — of 62% — than Vivo, however its market share was only slightly less as it captured 14.3% share in Q1 2021.
The maximum growth quarter over quarter was witnessed by South Korean tech giant Samsung of 79%. Samsung’s market share grew from 7.4% to 12.5% from Q4 2020 to Q1 2021. Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, associate director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Samsung was the world’s fastest growing 5G smartphone vendor in Q1 2021, leaping 79% QoQ to 17 million units shipped. Samsung is performing well with new 5G models, such as Galaxy S21 5G, S21 ultra 5G and S21+ 5G, in South Korea, North America, and parts of Europe.”
The last spot was taken by Xiaomi, whose market share grew from 9.2% to 12.2% registering a growth of 41%.
