Apple’s MacBook Pro, Mac Pro may get M2 upgrade this year – Times of India

It has been over two years since Apple broke up with Intel and moved on to its in-house M-series chips for Macs. While most Macs, including MacBook Air, Pro, Mac mini, iMac, and a new Mac Studio, have transitioned to the M-series chips, we still await a new Apple Silicon-powered Mac Pro, which had reportedly hit the roadblock but now it is on track for launch this year.
In the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Gurman reiterates that Apple has canceled the high-end configuration of the Mac Pro and is now moving ahead with the M2 Ultra-powered Mac Pro.
Apple had planned to introduce its in-house silicon-powered Mac Pro last year. Initially, the plan was to put two M1 chips inside the Mac Pro, but that chip, known as M1 Ultra, debuted with the MacBook Pro, forcing Apple to push back the Mac Pro to the next generation, says Gurman.
Gurman adds that Apple planned to ship Mac Pro in two – an M2 Ultra and an M2 Extreme – configurations. Similar to M1 Ultra, which is two M1 Pro chips fused, the M2 Extreme would be two M2 Ultras.
M2 Extreme out, M2 Ultra to remain top-tier chip
The M2 Extreme was expected to have double the power of the M2 Ultra with up to 24 CPU cores, 76 graphics cores, and at least 192GB of memory. The said M2 Extreme-powered Mac Pro would have been priced at more than $10,000 (around Rs 8,23,398).
So, the complexity and the high pricing surrounding the project made Apple forbid this configuration, settling for a rather modest M2 Ultra-powered Mac Pro.
Even after two years, the new M2 Ultra-powered Mac Pro would not change much, as it might come with a similar design as the last Intel-powered machine. Also, the new Mac Pro might leave users with how much ever system onboard memory is there, but there will be two SSD slots, as per Gurman.
MacBook Pro refresh en-route
The two MacBook Pros – 14 and 16 inches – are expected to be refreshed with the M2 Pro and M2 Ultra last year. But, Apple has pushed back the launch to the first half of this year, i.e., 2023. Besides a new chip inside, the new MacBook Pros would not change much.
No new iMac in 2023
Gurman, in his newsletter, adds that the much anticipated iMac Pro would not arrive this year. Also, the 24-inch iMac might get the M3 chip, but it will not happen anytime before 2024.
15-inch MacBook Air might come this year
While Apple seems to be done with the 12-inch MacBook Air, a new 15-inch MacBook Air could launch as early as this year.
