ASUS ROG Phone 5s and 5s Pro gaming smartphones have been launched with minor upgrades to the ROG Phone 5 (review) and its Ultimate Edition, respectively. The two new smartphones share a lot of features in common, including the Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset, up to 18GB LPDDR5 RAM, up to 512GB UFS 3.1 storage, Android 11, etc. And since these are gaming smartphones, AirTriggers, a bunch of accessories, and an industry-leading touch sampling rate of 360Hz to make the gaming experience more enjoyable. While the ROG Phone 5s features only the RGB-backlit Republic of Gamers logo on the back, the Pro model features a secondary colour, PAMOLED screen – called ROG Vision – to display preloaded as well as custom animations. Let’s get right into what the ASUS ROG Phone 5s and 5s Pro bring to the table!

ASUS ROG Phone 5s, 5s Pro prices

The ASUS ROG Phone 5s price in Taiwan is set as TWD 29,990 (about Rs 80,000) for the base variant with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. There is a second variant, one with 18GB RAM and 512GB internal storage, that costs TWD 33,990 (roughly Rs 90,000). Both the variants are available in Phantom Black and Aurora White colour options. As for the ROG Phone 5s Pro, you can get that for TWD 37,990 (approximately Rs 1,00,000) in only 18GB + 512GB configuration; it comes in only Phantom Black hue.

The smartphones are being released in Taiwan and China only for now, though the company will make them available only after the ROG Phone 5 units are out of stock. We can expect the two phones to also launch in India in a few weeks, provided all units of the existing models are sold out.

ASUS ROG Phone 5s specifications

Starting with the ROG Phone 5s specifications, you get a 6.78-inch Samsung E4 AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass Victus protection, 144Hz refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling rate, 1ms response time, and brightness of 800nits (max 1,200nits) as well as HDR and HDR 10+ support. There’s no notch, and the selfie camera is tucked away into the bezels above the display. The phone is powered by the 2.995GHz Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset with Adreno 660 graphics; the RAM and storage are LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 type on both variants. Its back panel only adorns the RGB-colour logo, as we mentioned above. AirTrigger buttons on the sides as well as in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor are part of the package too. To dissipate heat while gaming, the phone has the GameCool 5 system with an aerodynamic fan that can reduce CPU temperature by 10-degrees.

On the camera front, the ASUS ROG Phone 5s gets a 64MP Sony IMX 686 primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 5MP macro sensor. A 24MP selfie camera sits in the front. Camera features include support for 8K video recording as well as 3-axis electronic image stabilisation. The smartphone has a 6,000mAh battery with 65W wired fast-charging and support for 10W reverse charging. Connectivity options onboard include dual-band Wi-Fi, sub-6GHz 5G, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, USB Type-C 3.1 and 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and 3.5mm audio jack. Dual front-firing stereo speakers and Android 11 with ROG UI can be found on the ROG Phone 5s too.

ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro

Moving on to the ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro specifications, you get pretty much the same hardware but with a few extras. These include the secondary PAMOLED ROG Vision display that can display animations for incoming calls, battery charging, etc; while a similar display in the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate was monochrome, the 5s Pro has a colour panel. Another feature you can look forward to on the Pro model are two touch sensors on the back to act as gaming controls. The Pro model will come with the AeroActive Cooler 5 – which straps on a cooling fan to the phone, along with two additional buttons – in the box.

If you have the accessories from your ROG Phone 5 and plan to upgrade to the 5s series, then the accessories will continue working without a hitch.
