Bing with ChatGPT could be coming to Chrome and other browsers

TL;DR

  • Microsoft is slowly scaling its limited preview of Bing with ChatGPT.
  • The company is prioritizing those who have signed up on the waiting list and have Bing and Edge as their default search engine and browser.
  • A Microsoft executive says the company “intends” to bring Bing with ChatGPT to all browsers.

Microsoft made a convincing case for its new ChatGPT-powered Bing experience last week. But the company may still have a difficult time getting users to switch over from their preferred browser to Edge just to use the feature. However, that may not matter in the future as Bing with ChatGPT could find its way to other browsers eventually.

Last week, Microsoft showed off a demo of its new version of Bing. After the demo, the company encouraged users to sign up on a waitlist to try out Bing with ChatGPT. As it turns out, there are a lot of people who are interested in using Microsoft’s new product.

In a tweet, Microsoft VP and CMO Yusuf Mehdi stated there are “multiple millions now on the waitlist.” While some have gotten to try the new version of Bing already, the rollout has been slow. To that, Medhi says the tech giant plans to scale the launch “to millions of people beginning in the coming weeks.”

If you’re wondering when you’ll get your turn with the AI-enhanced Bing, Medhi revealed how Microsoft is picking who gets first dibs.

We are prioritizing those with Bing and Edge as their default search engine & browser as well as the Bing Mobile app installed to optimize the initial experience.

At the moment, Bing with ChatGPT is a feature that is exclusive to the Edge browser. If you try to use it in a different browser — like Chrome — you’ll be greeted by a message that says Edge is a requirement. However, it appears this may not be a requirement down the road. In Medhi’s tweet, the executive states, “Over time we intend to bring it to all browsers.” This means the feature could eventually find its way to Chrome, Opera, Firefox, and other browsers.

As for when Microsoft may remove this restriction, Medhi didn’t give any details. Will you use Bing with ChatGPT once it’s available to use on other browsers? Let us know in the comments below.
