Bought PS Plus subscription at discount? You might have to pay more for new upgrade
Aside from price differences between Essential & upper tier, why do we also have to pay back the discounted amount we’ve got in the past, when upgrading our membership?
Or is this just a thing for Asia region?
And remaining days of membership must be upgraded at once? How absurd.— DJ100W (@Dj100W) May 24, 2022
After the PS Plus launched in Hong Kong and Korea, some existing subscribers in Hong Kong have claimed that they have to pay back the discounted price to upgrade to the newest tiers. This gets even worse for members who had stacked subscriptions to get discounts on PS Plus Premium as they would have to pay for the entire subscription period at once. An existing subscriber has more than 3 years of PS Plus subscription left, so they would have to pay for that entire period right now for the upgrade, instead of paying yearly, quarterly, or monthly. So far, Sony has not responded to these claims. However, paying back the discounted price of PS Plus for an upgrade that the company itself began rolling out seems pretty anti-consumer. Hopefully, Sony will issue a statement regarding this soon.
PlayStation’s official website seemingly confirms that you will need to pay for the existing PS Plus subscription period upfront for the upgrade. The FAQ section reads, “When the new PlayStation Plus membership plans launch, you will be able to upgrade to a plan with more features and benefits. When you upgrade you will be charged a pro-rated fee to level up the remaining time on your existing membership to the desired level. For example, if you purchased a 12-month membership five months ago and have seven months left, you will need to pay a pro-rated upgrade fee to upgrade your remaining seven months to the desired plan level. Then on your next payment date, you will be charged for the standard price of the membership plan level that you upgraded to at your current payment frequency.”
Many players in Hong Kong and Korea are also disappointed to find out that Sony has offered fewer games than it previously claimed. Sony had said that the PS Plus will offer over 700 games for the highest tier, which is Premium or Deluxe. However, the service has launched in Asian regions with just over 250 games so far. That being said, Sony will add new games every month.
