BT begins tests on a new and faster 5G technology in Leeds

People living in Leeds can now boast that their city is one of the first in the UK to be equipped with the “latest cutting-edge 5G technology.”

According to a recent blog post, BT has begun a new trial in Leeds to test a 5G technology known as C-RAN (Cloud Radio Access Network), which supports 5G connectivity using cloud computing.

The technology achieves faster speeds, supports more users, and can be utilized in smaller devices and existing street furniture like lampposts or CCTV. Since it needs less hardware, it is also more cost-effective and can be used for creating more simplified and flexible networks.

As part of its tests, BT Wholesale has put C-RAN units at “key locations” in the city’s centre, which, will enhance coverage and connectivity, according to the company. EE and Three are currently using the infrastructure for the trial, which means their customers should now have a faster 5G connection in the city centre. Of course, BT will track how the infrastructure upgrade improves 5G access in the area during the trial.

However, even if you live in Leeds and are an EE or Three customer, you can’t take advantage of the better connectivity BT’s trial offers if you don’t have a 5G phone. The good news is that you can visit our best Three phone deals and best EE phone deals articles and grab a 5G smartphone with a great discount from there.
