Camera hacking: What it is and how to stay safe

October 2022 is being observed as the Cyber Security Awareness Month. With this initiative the Indian government aims to create awareness as well as sensitize internet users about different types of cyber attacks. One such attack is camera hacking. Camera hacking happens whenever a fraudster hacks into a digital device using malware and remotely takes control of the webcam/camera in the user‘s device. These devices can be desktops, laptops, tablets, security cameras, mobile phones and more. The criminal then uses the remotely activated camera to capture videos and photos without the knowledge of the victim.
How camera hacking takes place
The most common approach is through email messages that claim to offer information or entertainment. Users click on the files attached to the messages or on links embedded in the email to access the information and end up giving access to their device including its camera. Another tactic involves enticing email recipients to visit a website that hackers know will interest the victim. Hackers also use similar ways to make users download certain dangerous apps. In such cases, they allow a RAT (Remote Access Trojan) into their systems. These viruses can give a hacker complete, unrestricted control of a device.
How to not become victim of camera hacking:
– Enable firewall on your computer to prevent unauthorised access.
– Do not click on suspicious links or download files from unknown sources
– Use webcam shield/cover or tape it to keep it protected when not in use
– Keep your software up to date to patch up vulnerabilities
– Be wary of befriending strangers online who can lure you into sharing information that can be misused.
