ChatGPT has Google ‘worried’ about its Search business and more, here’s why – Times of India

Google, the “search engine,” is not just a search engine anymore; it has become people’s entry point to the internet and is much more of an adjective. But, the most popular search engine is seemingly looking worried over its shoulder as artificial intelligence takes over the world. It is not just humans who are worried about AI but also Google, who purportedly has issued a “red code” over the AI chatbot – ChatGPT, according to a report by The New York Times.
Since its birth in 1998, Google, which was then only a search engine, has taken away a big chunk of users from other search engines, like Yahoo, AOL, Bing, and more, as these could not keep up with the smarts of Google search. Now, as per the report, Google fears that artificial intelligence would do the same with their search engine.
All was fine at Google until three weeks ago, when OpenAI, an AI research company, opened its chatbot, the ChatGPT, to the world as “an experiment,” which then went viral for its creative answers.
Since then, it has been argued that why would someone, even Google anything, crawl through a dozen of links and then find the answer if they can just chat with the AI and have the answer served cooked to them?
Leave ChatGPT, there is also DALL-E, again of OpenAI, that can render images based on text prompts, and results have left the world astonished. So, experts believe that it is not just ChatGPT that Google has to worry about, there are many other research groups and small companies working on similar technology that are posed to replace the conventional ways of searching on the internet.
Google has its teeth deep into AI
It is not that Google does not have these kinds of “artificial intelligence” products, but it has been late to get them to the public. The LaMDA, Google’s chatbot, showcased last year, gained a lot of attention, primarily because a Google engineer called it sentient but also because it showed how far the technology has come.
Google has the technology it needs to fight ChatGPT. But why is it not implementing it? Well, there are some underlying issues, mainly with how the machine learning model works and Google’s business model, reveals a Google executive and voice memos, as heard by the New York Times.
A Google executive who spoke to the New York Times said that AI chatbots such as ChatGPT could upset the search business, ultimately affecting its ads business, which earns it the most money, and the voice memo says that CEO Sundar Pichai, who leads the AI efforts at the company, has been working on defining the company’s AI strategy, and has flipped over several groups to respond to the threat that’s looming over its search business.
So, bringing AI as a replacement for online search could effectively make Google lose out on all the money that ads bring for it since it would be hard to place ads within conversations when people are expecting direct answers.
There is more to the story, Google, which has been at the forefront of AI, fears that releasing AI to the public could affect society, as seen in a memo by The Times. If opened to the internet, the answers would be based on human-made data, full of misinformation, bias, and racism, delivering reprehensible results.
Can AI chatbots replace Google search
Well, not right now. ChatGPT or any other AI bot cannot scrap the internet for answers. Yes, it does a great job at being creative, but it is not factually accurate every time you summon it, and if you are doing so, it is not a good idea, says Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
We asked ChatGPT the same question, and here’s what it said, “No, ChatGPT is not a search engine like Google. ChatGPT is a variant of the GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) language model, which is a type of artificial intelligence that is trained to generate human-like text. It is not designed to perform tasks such as searching or answering queries like a search engine. Instead, it is intended to generate text based on a given prompt or input, and can be used for tasks such as language translation, text summarization, and language generation.”
It is hard to say what the future holds, but Google has been actively working to enhance its search engine using the same technology underlies beneath LaMDA, ChatGPT, and other AI chatbots.
