What is the total number of apps banned by the government now?
The government of India will ban 54 more Chinese apps that pose a threat to privacy and security of India, informed sources. The ministry of electronics and IT (Meity) used its powers under the Section 69a of the Information Technology Act, 2000, to enforce the ban.

The Chinese apps banned include Beauty Camera: Sweet Selfie HD, Beauty Camera – Selfie Camera, Equalizer & Bass Booster, CamCard for SalesForce Ent, Isoland 2: Ashes of Time Lite, Viva Video Editor, Tencent Xriver, Onmyoji Chess, Onmyoji Arena, AppLock and Dual Space Lite.
Why are these apps being banned?
These apps are being banned as they pose a threat to India’s security, as per the sources.
Are these new apps or clones of old apps
Many of these apps belong to the Chinese giant Tencent, Alibaba and gaming company NetEase. They are “rebranded or rechristened avatars” of apps that were banned in June 2020.
Have Google and Apple banned these apps?
Though there is no official comment so far from Google and Apple’s side, the ministry of electronics and IT which issued order has directed the app stores of the two companies to block these apps. Many of the apps are already blocked and others should be by the end of the day.
What is the total number of Chinese aps banned in India?
Since first half of 2020, the government has banned around 224 Chinese apps. The first ban was announced in June 2020, starting with 59 apps including popular apps like TikTok, Shareit, WeChat, UC News, UC Browser, Mi Community and more.
