Companion mode, meeting transcriptions and more: New features coming to Google Meet – Times of India

By now, for a lot of working professionals, Google Meet has become a rather integral part of day-to-day work life. Google has integrated Meet in Gmail and constantly rolls out new features to give better experience to users. Google will announce a slew of features coming to Google Meet at its Cloud Next 2022 developer and partner conference later today. Here’s what we can expect:

Companion mode for phones

The companion mode is a feature that allows users to raise a hand, create polls, and access controls from laptop. The companion mode is expected to be rolled out on mobiles early 2023.

Meeting transcriptions

Getting a transcription of a meeting is a rather handy addition that Google is making to Meet. Users had to rely on third-party apps and services currently to transcribe a meeting. Google is making this a built-in feature and it will roll out in 2023. Meetings in English will be transcribed in French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.
Speaker Spotlight is a new feature that will come with Google Slides. This will allow users to put video feeds directly into their presentations. Users will also be able to control Slides from Meet directly — this will allow them to see the content as well as the participants simultaneously.
Recently, Google added the feature that allows users to quickly unmute themselves during a meeting. You can now hold down the spacebar to be unmuted, then release the spacebar to return to a muted state. “We hope this makes it even easier for you to participate in your meetings by quickly unmuting to say something,” said the company in the blog.
