Cyclonic storm Mandous recently formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and was last reported to be 580km away from the southeast of Chennai. According to IMD, the cyclone is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Sriharikota around midnight on December 9. The country’s weather agency noted that cyclonic storm Mandous (meaning treasure box) has moved towards the northwest with a speed of 11kmph during the past six hours. The agency’s latest report mention that the cyclone that formed at the centre of the southwest Bay of Bengal is laying 460 km southeast of Karaikal and about 550 km southeast of Chennai.

Respective state governments have also ordered schools and colleges to remain closed for two days. Mandous is likely to maintain its intensity of a severe cyclonic storm for almost six hours and then it will weaken gradually thereafter.
