India is the latest to join the list of countries in imposing stricter regulations for social media companies. Though the new set of rules aims to safeguard citizens’ digital rights, it has divided the industry into two camps. While a few ‘Atmanirbhar apps’ are trying to engage more users, their bigger rivals seem to be concerned over stringent compliance norms.

On February 25, 2021, the Indian government unveiled a new set of rules aimed at increasing the onus of accountability on social media companies and strengthening their scrutiny to fight the menace of fake news, which often sparks communal tensions in the world’s most populous democracy.
