Does the Fitbit Charge 5 use the same charger as the Fitbit Charge 4?

Wondering if your Fitbit Charge 4 charger will work on the new Charge 5? The unfortunate answer is no, it won’t. The consolation is your new device shouldn’t have to juice up often. However, depending on what else you own, you may still have an extra charger on hand.

The Fitbit Charge 5 can’t use the Charge 4 charger

A number of significant hardware and software upgrades to the Fitbit Charge 5 may have even Charge 4 owners taking a second look. The changes from the former to the latter showcase a considerable jump for the Charge line, especially compared to the smaller shift we saw between the Fitbit Charge 3 and Charge 4. For better or worse, the substantial updates mean saying goodbye to some compatibility.

Among the many changes to the new Fitbit Charge 5 is its proprietary charger. Dimensional adjustments (think thinner and sleeker) mean the device isn’t compatible with its predecessor’s charger. Instead, the Charge 5 will come with a magnetic charging cable that fits its smaller frame. The good news is that even with an AMOLED display and advanced sensors, users still get the conveniences of long battery life. According to Fitbit, the device will last up to seven days on just a single charge.

The Fitbit Luxe charger will work

If you figured that as a direct successor, Fitbit’s newest device would work with the Charge 4 charger, you’re probably not alone. For users concerned about Fitbit’s e-waste management though, there will be some overlap, (just not where we expected). While some design elements of the Fitbit Charge 5 are borrowed from Fitbit’s higher-end devices, the charger is borrowed from the Fitbit Luxe line. Luckily this means the newest Fitbit tracker is compatible with Luxe chargers.

We’re still hoping that eventually, Fitbit streamlines their chargers to all be interchangeable. In the meantime, make sure you have the right one for your device.
