EE customers get the best upgrade in years but it comes with a warning
EE is making one of its biggest and most welcomed changes in years that should mean you never miss a WhatsApp message or email again. The UK network has just announced that all new or existing customers who upgrade their current plan will be treated to the firm’s ‘Stay Connected’ guarantee. This update means that anyone going over their monthly data allowance will still be able to connect to the web without needing to buy more access.
Now, for anyone who regularly runs out of data, it’s worth noting that this free internet boost won’t let you stream endless Netflix boxsets or download hours of music files on the move.
It’s been created to keep customers connected to emails and WhatsApp messages until their full allowance kicks in again at the start of a new month.
As EE explains, “the EE Stay Connected service automatically switches on once a customer has used their monthly data allowance and is fast enough for customers to send and receive data messages, check their emails on the go, and get where they need to with access to maps – helping them keep in touch.”
It’s a nice addition from EE as if you run out of data with just a couple of days left before your next allowance starts it should save you needing to buy expensive data add-ons.
EE says it will be available from 7th July across new Smart and Essential Pay Monthly handset plans and SIM-only plans,

Speaking about the update, Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer Division, said: “We’re always looking for ways to offer our customers the best experience when using our award winning 4G and 5G networks.
“That’s why we’re introducing ‘Stay Connected’ data in our new pay monthly plans, becoming the only major UK network to enable customers to stay connected at no extra cost when their monthly data allowance runs out.”
So that’s the good news but there is a catch. If you do sign up from July 7 – and get the ‘Stay Connected’ update – you will also have to face paying for using your phone when travelling in Europe.
From tomorrow, anyone joining EE or upgrading their current deal will need to pay £2 per day to access their UK allowance when abroad. This controversial charge will actually start in January 2021 with EE saying that the new rules will only apply to new customers joining the network or existing users who switch to new a deal after the July deadline.
That means, as long as you buy a new contract now or switch to something different before tomorrow you won’t face the penalty for sending messages and checking Facebook by the pool.
However, if you do take out that new contract today you also won’t be able to take advantage of that Stay Connected guarantee. Looks like EE customers have some tough choices to make.
