Enable this Chrome setting to improve your ‘PC’ performance: What is this feature, step-by-step guide and more – Times of India

Google Chrome has recently received a new version 108 update. As a part of the update, the web browser has received several new features such as better emoji support, new power and resource management features and more. Among all the new Chrome 108 features, one feature that actually makes users’ life easier is the memory Saver’. It allows Chrome to go light on system memory and also helps improve the overall performance.
In this article, we will discuss Chrome’s Memory Saver feature, what it does, how it works and also the steps you need to take to enable it.
Chrome Memory Saver
We all know Chrome can be a memory hog at times, especially when a lot of tabs are open on the browser. It not only puts extra load on the system memory, but it also reduces the system performance, especially on devices that with less amount of RAM.

Chrome Memory Saver is an adaptation of Microsoft Edge’s Sleeping Tabs feature. For those who don’t know, the feature automatically puts unused tabs into sleep or in an inactive state to free up computer memory which let that extra RAM be used for other apps and services on the device and improves overall system performance.
Chrome Memory Saver: How it works
According to Google’s official description of the feature, Memory Saver, when enabled, automatically makes unused tabs inactive and frees up the memory that it was consuming. Now, Google hasn’t specified the exact time interval after which it puts a tab into an inactive state. But, once a tab gets inactive, it frees up the RAM which can then be used by other tabs or other services running on the computer.
Also, the tab becomes active again as soon as a user moves to the tab automatically.
How to enable Memory Saver on Chrome
Memory Saver feature is tucked under the Performance section of Chrome. In case you are not able to find the option, you’ll need to manually enable it using the Chrome flag. Just visit ‘chrome://flags/#high-efficiency-mode-available’ and choose Enable from the drop-down menu against the option ‘Enable the high-efficiency mode feature in the settings’
Now, relaunch Google Chrome and the option will be there. Once done, follow the steps below:

  • Click on three vertical dots at the top right corner and head to Settings
  • Now, click on the Performance section from the left column
  • Click on the Memory Saver option and enable the toggle in front of it.

That’s it. The Memory Saver feature is now active.
However, there’s a drawback of this feature and Google Chrome has a solution for that as well. This feature can be annoying if you love to play a video on YouTube or play online games in the background. In that case, Memory Saver will disable the tab momentarily and that can pause the video or game.
To avoid that, click on the ‘Add’ button in front of the ‘Always keep these sites active’ option and add the website URL.
