Explained: Maximum compatibility option within Personal Hotspot on iPhone

Apple iPhone Personal Hotspot feature allows users to share mobile data with other devices like laptops, PCs, Macs, tablets, etc. It is simple to use and all users need to do is turn on the Personal Hotspot option from the Control Centre or from the Settings app.
Recently, Apple added a new option under Personal Hotspot called Maximum Compatibility. The name itself is pretty defining. This means, when the feature is turned on, it will improve the compatibility of the Personal Hotspot of the device.
However, there are certain things like when you need to turn on this feature. Why there’s a need for this option for Personal Hotspot and why it is turned off by default. Let us explain:
What is Maximum Compatibility feature for Personal Hotspot?
As mentioned, Maximum Compatibility improves the compatibility of the Personal hotspot for the device. This means when the feature is turned on it will be available for most devices out there. s
Why does this feature exist and when do you need to turn it on
As we all know that there are multiple Wi-Fi bands available. The most common ones are 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The 2.4GHz is the most common and most compatible Wi-Fi band and it also offers better coverage. However, it offers limited speed. 5GHz, on the other hand, has low coverage but supports faster speed.
iPhone, by default, turns on Personal Hotspot in 5GHz mode. That means it will offer faster internet speeds to the devices connected with it. However, in order to get that speed, other devices are required to support the 5GHz band. Case in point, most modern devices like smartphones, tablets, TVs, etc support 5GHz. But, there are some devices that don’t, like IoT-enabled devices such as smart bulbs, smart switches, etc do not. Also, some older printers, laptops, etc with older Wi-Fi cards do not support the 5GHz band.
This is where the Maximum Compatibility mode comes in. When the feature is enabled, iPhone automatically switches to the 2.4GHz band. This means, it may offer relatively slower internet speeds, but it will work with most devices out there.
So, if you have ever come across a situation where your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot is not being detected by other devices, then this is the time you need to turn on the Maximum Compatibility option under the Personal Hotspot settings.
