Explained: What are upload and download speeds; and why you should opt for asymmetric internet plan – Times of India

Irrespective of the internet plan you buy, you must be aware that there are two internet speeds involved– upload and download. Historically, it is the download speed that has always been advertised and asked by users. But with rapid change in how we use the internet, you should take into consideration both upload and download speeds.
Internet speed is measured in megabits per second or Mbps. And usually with all broadband internet connections you will get high download speed. But when it comes to uploading a story on Instagram or publishing a video on YouTube most users realise that the speeds are not up to the mark. This is where upload speeds are important. With fibre internet connectivity, things have improved greatly and all thanks to ISPs boasting asymmetric internet speeds.
What is the difference between upload and download speed
Download speed simply means the rate of data transfer from the servers of a service provider to your device, be it computer or mobile. On the other hand, upload speed means the rate at which the data is transferred from your device to the service provider’s servers. For example, when you watch a video on YouTube, you are essentially downloading it. But when you try to publish your own video on your YouTube channel, it is the upload speed that matters. Typically, you will get way faster download speeds compared to upload speeds.
For the record, as per the latest Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index, the average download speed available on 4G mobile internet data is 17.77Mbps while the upload speed is 5.09Mbps. On the other hand, the broadband speeds in India are way better. The average download speed for fixed broadband service is 60.06Mbps and average upload speed is 56.47Mbps. Now, notice the huge gap in upload and download speeds for mobile internet data, this is the reason videos and other content takes time to upload in India when you use mobile data. Having said that, things are way faster for broadband users, as the average upload and download speeds are similar.
What is asymmetric internet connection
When you buy a new fibre plan, always ask whether or not the connection is asymmetric or not. This simply means that you will get the same upload and download speeds. So, uploading videos will be as fast as downloading them. This is essential for gamers and content creators. Most fibre plans in India offer asymmetric speeds and you should always check that with your service provider.
Another thing you must ask your ISP is about the average speed. Most internet service providers will only advertise and boast peak speeds or the highest possible speed for the plan. The reality is you wont get peak speeds always. So, ask about the average speed of the connection.
