Explained: What is Xbox MVP program, why Microsoft may shut it down – Times of India

Microsoft offers multiple programs for its Xbox community to keep fans and players involved on the gaming platform. These programs include the Xbox Insider program, the Xbox Ambassador program and the Xbox MVP program. The Redmond giant is reportedly planning to end the Xbox MVP program soon. According to a report by Windows Central, the entire Xbox MVP program will be shut down at the end of this month. After this, the company will no longer recognise the award program which is offered to several community members including — developers, moderators, streamers and creators.
What is the Xbox MVP program
The Xbox MVP award is one of the most esteemed ways of honouring a community leader and is bestowed upon the members who went above and beyond. MVPs are nominated by the community and are recognised directly by Xbox. The company also allow MVPs to participate in exclusive events, conversations and programs related to Xbox. Microsoft might be planning to end this program on December 30.
However, the current roster that includes active Xbox MVPs will be able to enjoy the status. The company is also expected to offer a new way for the MVPs to continue contributing to Xbox and the community.

Difference between the MVP program and other Xbox programs
The other two Xbox programs have overshadowed the Xbox MVP program as there is a major difference between these programs. The Xbox Insider and Ambassador programs allow members early access to new games and features in the Xbox ecosystem. These programs also let users provide their opinions on new changes.
On the other hand, the Xbox MVP program is a community of Xbox fans that aims to curate an environment of safety, positivity and inclusivity among the players. Over 50% of the Xbox MVPs are already Xbox Ambassadors. Moreover, the company is also enabling select MVPs to become Community Champions, which will help them in getting more involved in the Xbox Ambassador program.
What are Community Champions
Xbox started Community Champions to reward the most active and supportive members of the Xbox Ambassadors program. With time, the company has offered the Community Champions more opportunities to become involved. If Microsoft ends the Xbox MVP program, these Community Champions will become even more important for the gaming platform.
Moreover, Xbox MVPs who are invited to become Community Champions will be able to continue participating in confidential discussions related to the company’s plans. These Community Champions will also be allowed to offer feedback directly to Xbox. Earlier, the MVPs played a similar role during the launch of Game Pass and other services offered by the company.
Why Microsoft is planning to shut down the Xbox MVP program
In the case of Xbox, both Ambassador and MVP programs seem a bit redundant. With this change, the company will stop nominating Xbox MVPs for the award. However, the Xbox Ambassador program is expected to play a more important role in the way Xbox keeps on developing as an ecosystem.
The report didn’t clearly mention if the tech major is also ending its own MVP program that promotes distinguished members of the wider Microsoft Community. If this shift in the company’s approach will affect the Microsoft MVPs as well is still unknown.
